A Word From The Headmistress: Sr. Felicity

Hello and welcome to St. Winefride’s School.

St. Winefride, patron saint of our school and of Shrewsbury

Our school was founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1868. It caters for boys and girls from 3 – 11 years and has a long tradition of high academic standards. St. Winefride’s School is situated in Belmont close to Shrewsbury Town Centre. St. Winefride’s is a Catholic School. Our school motto is ‘Soli Deo” (Only God). Bearing in mind our motto and the catholic ethos of the school, the aims of the school are:

  • To educate the child in a caring and Christian atmosphere.
  • To encourage out children to reach their full potential, mentally, physically, socially and morally.
  • To emphasise kindness, care and mutual respect.
  • To promote an awareness of the needs and religious beliefs of others. This will enable them to become responsible citizens and an asset in any community.

Through our broad curriculum we also incorporate the values of democracy, individual liberty and the rule of law. Children of other religious denominations are welcome and share in the religious ethos of the school. Arising from our Christian values of the school is an awareness of Third World poverty, the poor and the deprived. The whole school raises money for charity throughout the school year. These charities include CAFOD, Severn Hospice and the school has a special interest in Prada Children’s Homes in the Philippines which cater for deprived and traumatised children.

St. Winefride’s provides a secure and happy environment in which children thrive and achieve. The day is filled with interesting and motivating activities designed to stimulate and inspire, as well as to instil a love of learning in the child that will last a long time. Teaching is led by a committed and efficient staff team and children are taught to a high standard. Considerable emphasis is placed on the three ‘R’s’ in which a good grounding is so essential.

In November 2016, St. Winefride’s was ranked 27th in the top 100 independent schools in England by the Sunday Times.

The sound of music both vocal and instrumental can be heard daily. Ballet, drama, art and craft all play an important part in the life of the school. Music lessons are offered in brass, piano, wind, string and percussion.

French and Spanish languages are also taught at St Winefride’s.

The school has a multi-sport programme. Children can participate in netball, tennis, football, hockey, cricket, rounders, athletics and cross country. Children take part in both friendly matches and competitive tournaments.

Children get the opportunity to learn skills in different sports each term. These sports include badminton and table tennis. The children in the junior classes attend swimming lessons in the Quarry Swimming Pool in the autumn and summer terms. Gymnastics plays a big part in our sports program. All children participate in gymnastics including kindergarten. Our A teams participate in regional and national competitions and we currently have a number of national champions in different age groups. Kindergarten caters for 3 year olds and offers a secure foundation for developing independence and confidence of the young child and assists the transition from home to school.

The school offers a number of different clubs – Mandarin, chess, gymnastics, hockey, football. After school care is available until 5.30pm. We look forward to hearing from you and taking the opportunity to introduce you to our school.
